Case 1: Math and CS at a Top 40 US University — Admitted to Harvard CSE
GPA 3.9+, no internship experience, and research experience with results to show for it.
Case 2: NYU Undergraduate — Admitted to CMU MSIN
GPA 3.6, internship experience, and no research output.
Case 2, Continued: NYU Undergraduate — Admitted to CMU MSIN
Case 3: Jiao Tong–UMich Joint Undergraduate Program — Admitted to CMU and Cornell MEng CS
GPA around 3.8, with some AI experience but limited project depth. The student ultimately chose Cornell MEng CS.
Case 4: Joint Chinese–International Undergraduate Program — Admitted to CMU SESV
The US partner university was ranked outside the Top 100. The student had an internship arranged through family connections and on-campus research experience, but no research output.
Case 5: Jiao Tong–UMich Joint Undergraduate Program — Admitted to UChicago CS
GPA around 3.6, with results from AI work but relatively limited industry experience.
Case 6: UCLA CS Undergraduate — Admitted to CMU MISM and UIUC MCS
GPA around 3.7, with only the Heima Dianping coding project and no internship or research experience. The student ultimately chose a new-grad SDE position at a major US technology company.
